EQUINE MASSAGE

Picture“Jane” Carmel, CA
Horses experience problems in motion (and mind) resulting from the strain and exertion of exercise and work, stressful experiences and from the aging process.  Massage sessions are designed for the unique needs of each horse and may include a combination of therapeutic and sports massage techniques. Highly sensitive or newly rescued horses often respond more readily to energy medicine so this modality may be offered first. One of the most effective techniques I have certified in is Wilson Meagher Sports Therapy. This method employs the application of an anatomically accurate series of soft tissue techniques to restore complete freedom and ease of movement in the equine body. This method identifies stress points in the muscle and then through its techniques, alleviates muscle restriction, tightness and pain. This work is specific to the cause of the muscular problem while treating the entire body. Massage therapy is a natural approach to pain management for the senior horse, and can be a valuable addition to every horse’s wellness plan.

The results of this work are:
  • An increase in freedom and range of motion
  •  Improved performance, balance and endurance
  • Aids in prevention of injury and loss of mobility
  •  Alleviates pain caused by muscle restriction
  • Improved circulation of blood and lymph
  • Promotes graceful aging
  • A general sense of well being
  • A relaxed mind
“Motion is a continuous wave that moves through the poll to the hind foot.  When freedom of motion is limited from muscle tightening, stress and strain will develop in others parts of the body.”         -Jo-Ann Wilson

Equine massage session

Each massage session usually lasts 45-60 minutes. For the initial session an owner or trainer must be present to discuss the horse’s history and present concerns; change in stride length, drifting to one side, heavy in one rein, a hollowed back, change in attitude, switching leads, ect.
A gait analysis will then be conducted at the walk. The massage prepares the body to be properly exercised and the horse is trotted to reset range of motion and encourage synchronization of body movement.

Ideally horses should be in the barn or somewhere they feel relaxed and someone should be available to hand walk and trot the horse before and after the massage session.  Horses may held by an assistant or worked on in their stall depending on what works best for each individual animal. You will receive a copy of the notes from each massage session along with further recommendations for continuing care.

About my teacher:
Jo-Ann Wilson

The Wilson Meagher Method combines the logic and technique of sportsmassage developed by the late Jack Meagher (pronounced “Mar”) with the practice of specific soft tissue applications, biomechanics and body conditioning developed by Jo-Ann Wilson.
Jo-Ann was a longtime associate of the late Jack Meagher, a pioneer in the field of sports massage therapy. She has served as the sports massage therapist for the horses of the United States equestrian team for almost three decades. Her practice includes horses of all breeds and disciplines, from Olympic to pleasure horses. Her work has been featured in leading magazines such as Practical Horseman , Dressage Today, Hoefslag Magazine (Holland) and was profiled in the Chronicle of the Horse titled “Jo-Ann Wilson Can Change a Horse with Her Hands”.
